About Us
Getaway Tours was started by myself, Johan Brits in 1993, it started as a company offering day trips into the Kruger National Park but within a few years diversified to include other areas like Cape Town, the Kalahari, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Our clients were a diverse group, from Australians to Germans, French, Scandinavians and a host of other nationalities!
Fortunately I had lived and worked in these countries during my construction years and also as a child lived in Namaqualand, Namibia and the Kalahari, so these destinations were very well known to me. Other destinations later include Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Myself, I’m a qualified field guide (registered with The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) with over 30 years of guiding experience, I also worked in the Kruger Park as a trails leader on the Lebombo Overland trail. My introduction to nature started at a very young age in Namaqualand where we spent many years exploring the wide open spaces!
Due to inquiries from clients in later years we expanded our tours to include East Africa. Here we decided the best option was to collaborate with existing companies in these countries, as they were the specialists in these areas, and till today we are in partnership with them, and this arrangement has proven to work the best, financially and logistically for everyone involved! We have also recently partnered with a company in Central Africa to offer tours to this region of Gabon, Congo Republic, C.A.R. and Equatorial Guinea.
All our advertised tours can be tailored to suit our guests, one can either opt for an existing itinerary or change it to suit.
We offer tours for single persons, couples and group tours, lodging or camping, or a combination.

I took a solo trip to South Africa in August 2022, visiting Kruger National Park and Cape Town, and the entire experience was unforgettable. Johan created a fully personalised itinerary perfect for a first-timer like me. He went above and beyond to accommodate my halal dietary needs and even made sure both of my accommodations had great views.
He drove the entire trip himself and was dedicated to making sure I got the full safari experience. His expertise really showed — we managed to spot all of the Big Five. Trip review September 2024 round trip 14 days Vic Falls/Chobé/ Khalagadi/Kruger
After a fantastic holiday experience in April 2023, where we visited Namibia and did the Skeleton Coast Tour, I contacted Getaway Tours in January ‘24 again and asked for a tailormade itinerary for a 2 weeks safari in South Africa for September.
Johan came with excellent suggestions for a wonderful, once in a lifetime trip, connecting the highlights of the area for an affordable price. This contained Vic Falls (Zimbabwe), Chobe (Botswana), Kalahari (tented jeep safari) and several days in lodges in the Kruger park.
Getaway tours arranged all bookings and accommodations and was instrumental in finding the right and comfortable accommodation, close to the main areas and best activities. This ensured a relaxed and hassle free holiday experience. Johan joined us on the Kalahari and Kruger trips as our guide, chauffeur and cook! Man, can he make a great BBQ!
We truly enjoyed his company, his stories about Africa’s history, his thorough knowledge of wildlife and birds.
